Losing a Loved One

The Hardest Time in Life

The loss of a loved one is one of the most difficult experiences that we will all eventually go through. Dealing with losing a loved one is, of course, extremely difficult for any family member, but contrary to popular belief, there are no set stages of grief. Everyone will handle the loss of the loved one, and the ensuing grief thereafter, in different ways. While that is true, there are many common traditions (such as creating a gravestone), that experts believe help with the grief. Below is a summary of some of the more common tips.

The first bit of advice is somewhat ironic: it’s important to remember that losing a loved one is a difficult time. Another piece of advice that experts commonly give to people after losing a loved one is to find a way to permanently memorialize the loved one. This can be done in a number of ways, any of which are healthy, and even vital, for good mental health.

Knowing that such a permanent memorial exists can take some of the permanence out of losing a loved one and, accordingly, ease the suffering of grieving family members. Headstones, of course, can be used even in cases in which a lost loved one has been cremated. Likewise, special memorial products, such as memorial cremation rocks, cremation urns and even keepsake urns can help establish permanent memorials in locations other than a traditional cemetery. It’s not uncommon, for example, for people, after losing a loved one, to use these products to establish memorials in a number of locations across the country or even the world.

Cremation jewelry is a relatively new concept that allows individuals to create 'portable tributes'. Basically, cremation keepsake jewelry is different types of pendants, bracelets, even rings or cuff links, that accommodate a small portion of cremation ash. These pendants can also be filled with earth from a special place, crushed funeral flowers, or small clipping of hair for those that are uncomfortable wearing the ash. Once filled the pendant can be worn to keep the memory of a loved one close at all times. These can be a powerful and comforting tribute to help one through the grief of the loss.

The grief caused by the loss of a loved one can make memorial planning difficultOrganizing a fitting funeral is, perhaps, the most common way to cope with losing a loved one. Funerals follow a wide variety of formats and customs according to the religious culture of the deceased, but they almost all have one important feature in common: providing a way for those who have lost a loved one to express their grief publicly. Funeral eulogies are typically moving tributes composed and delivered by those who have lost a loved one in order to celebrate the life of the important person. After writing and delivering a touching eulogy, losing a loved one can often seems less like an ending and more like a beginning of precious memories that will last forever.
